Carbon Markets Opportunities
In order to meet their GHG emission reduction targets filed with the UNFCCC, countries must identify GHG mitigation measures to implement. Most of these measures lead to a reduction or avoidance of GHG emissions, and can thus be developed as carbon assets. This dashboard provides an overview of potential carbon revenue and relevant methodologies for harnessing carbon finance from each country's mitigation measures and priorities, serving as a supplementary funding source for achieving their climate goals.
Country
Note : We applied a normalization factor to provide realistic carbon market revenue estimates. This factor adjusts the greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential based on 1.5°C compatible pathways for each country, ensuring the figures reflect achievable emission reductions aligned with global climate targets.
Methodology Employed:
The prices referenced are based on the voluntary carbon market (VCM) approach to meeting the country's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Alternative market mechanisms, such as Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, could potentially help secure prices as high as $20 per carbon credit.

Disclaimer : The data and insights shared in this module are based on each country’s identified mitigation measures as per their NDC filings with the UNFCCC, as well as the respective national NDC implementation plans. The carbon revenue potential projections have been aligned with 1.5°C emission pathways by applying normalization factors—grounded in each country’s feasible reduction potential. This approach accounts for operational constraints, policy challenges, and the reality that not all of the mitigation potential can be monetized through carbon credits.
